solve svn error "can't recode string" on Mac OS X (See related posts)

was getting this error on certain files until I added this to ~/.bash_profile :
export LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8"
export LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
to mac osx subversion by kumar303 on Thu Apr 14 21:32:37 -0400 2005
